SSA at 90, debunking myths
The New York Times has an article out to mark SSA’s 90th birthday. It goes through several myths about SSA that have been propagated through misinformation over the years, mainly by folks intent on undermining the program. In true Times form, it saves the best for last… and debunks the current administration’s hype of non-existent widespread “waste, fraud, and abuse.” The mantra that is often used to cut programs that serve the least fortunate among us. As the Times notes, “less than 1 percent of the more than $1 trillion the agency pays in benefits each year are considered improper payments.” That is evidence of an extremely well-run program, and the article doesn’t mention how low SSA’s administrative costs are, especially compared to any private insurance company. So, congratulations on 90 years SSA, here’s to 90 more!
